Up-and-coming local choreographer and dancer Elaine Kwok will perform with dance artists Gabbie Chan, Cyrus Hui, Connie Lau and Sylvia Lee in her latest work "Solo".
Kwok is a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where she majored in modern dance. In 2011, she was invited to perform her solo work, "Of Mud and Dust", at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, and was guest curator and choreographer at the Hong Kong City Festival 2008's Bare Stage Project 08. Another of her works, "Let the Body Flow", which was supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Home Affairs Bureau, has been performed in Hong Kong and Thailand. Kwok is active in the dance scene in Hong Kong, collaborating with various clubs and organisations including the Hong Kong Fringe Club, Guangdong Modern Dance Company and E-side Dance Company. Other works by Kwok include "Player Rhapsody", "That's Dance" and "Melting Solitude". She now works as a choreographer at Passoverdance and as a freelance dancer, tutor and choreographer.
Gabbie Chan graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts majoring in Chinese Dance, and has been awarded numerous scholarships to visit America and China on exchange programmes. Chan has been involved in numerous projects including the New Force in Motion Series' "Right Here, Right Now" and "Mystic Realm" with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra; Hong Kong's Expo 2010 Shanghai China programme "Crossing Borders" and "Arts-Travel-Two Cities"; American Dance Festival 2009's "Flower of the bone" and Hong Kong Dance Company's China Perform Project - "Qingming Riverside". Chan is currently a freelance dancer and dance instructor.
Cyrus Hui graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts majoring in modern dance and choreography. Following graduation he pursued further study at Folkwang University of the Arts, Germany, with a Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund Scholarship. In Germany he trained with Duminique Mercy. Hui is currently a freelance choreographer, performing artist and dance instructor. Over the years, he has gained extensive experience in Germany, France, Italy, Guangzhou and Taiwan, and has been involved in a series of projects including DanceArt's "Overdue", "Positioning" by Hong Kong Theatre Design Company Limited and New Force in Motion Series' "Here it goes again".
Connie Lau gained a BFA (Honours) degree in 2008 from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in contemporary dance and choreography. She has been involved in productions by various local dance companies, including E-side Dance Company, Hong Kong Theatre Design Company Limited, Hong Kong Dance Alliance and the Fringe Club. She is currently a freelance dancer, teacher and choreographer.
Sylvia Lee graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree, majoring in ballet. She is also a former student of the Royal Academy of Dance and has received funding from the Jackie Chan Scholarship and Li Po Chun Charitable Trust Fund. Her many dance performances include the lead role in "The Story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai" by Yuri Ng and she has performed in Hong Kong Ballet Group's "Swan Lake"; Hong Kong Dance Company's "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer" (Hong Kong and Shanghai tour); "Narcissus and Echo" and "Passenger" by Neo-Dance; "Here it goes again..." by Cyrus Hui and "Hug Hug" by DanceArt. Lee was bronze medalist in the 1st Young Ballet Stars Award in 2000. She is currently a freelance dancer and teacher.
"Solo" by Elaine Kwok is one of the attractions of the "New Force in Motion Series" presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be staged at 8pm on October 28 and 29 (Friday and Saturday), and at 4pm on October 29 and 30 (Saturday and Sunday), at the Black Box Theatre, Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre. Tickets priced at $160 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet, by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
