In response to media enquiries, the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Stephen Lam, said today (October 9) that throughout his public service career his primary objective had always been protecting the long term interest of Hong Kong, and that he had been working with people and organisations holding different views on the basis of mutual respect and mutual understanding.

Mr Lam said, "I notice that there are different views about my new appointment as the Chief Secretary.  I shall take heed of people's opinions and strive to better communicate and cooperate with different political parties.

"During the remainder of the current-term Government, I look forward to working closely with various sectors of the community and Members of the Legislative Council to enhance governance; promote economic, livelihood, cultural and political development; improve the well being of the grassroot sector; foster closer cooperation between Hong Kong and the Mainland; as well as ensure a smooth transition to the next-term Government."

Mr Lam emphasised that he would discharge his duties as the Chief Secretary with the mind and heart to serve the community and the people of Hong Kong.
