In the coming months the Leisure and Cultural Services Department's "Dance on Parallel Lines" series will present three creative programmes by modern dance choreographers.
The first programme, "Pulsate", will be staged in November by choreographers Justyne Li from Neo Dance HK, Wong Tan-ki from Neo Dance HK and Xing Liang.
Justyne Li graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in ballet and modern dance. Li is a former member of the Hong Kong Ballet and Tanz Graz (Austria), and a soloist with Ballett Bremerhaven (Germany). She is currently working as an independent dancer and choreographer. Her recent choreography has included "5 Solos" and "Toy Story" (Ballett Bremerhaven), "Symphonic Magic" (Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra), "Narcissus and Echo" (Emerging Choreographer Series I - Taking Off), "Angel #666 vs Demon #999" (Hong Kong Dance Festival 2006, IndepenDance) and "Studio Storm".
Wong Tan-ki is another graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and is currently working as a freelance dancer, choreographer, multimedia designer and teacher. His recent performances have included "Positioning", "Key to Strange Realm", "As Time Goes By", "Symphonic Magic" (Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra) and "Narcissus and Echo" (Emerging Choreographers Series I - Taking Off). His recent choreographic work includes "Passenger", "Studio Storm", "Angel #666 vs Demon #999" and "Dance machine" – a showcase for Asian Dancers.
Born in Beijing, Xing Liang graduated in classical dance from the Beijing Dance Academy in 1991 and joined Guangdong Modern Dance Company in 1993. Xing has won numerous awards including the Gold Award in the Male Solo Class at the 6th Paris International Dance Competition in 1994; the Gold Award in the Modern Dance Section at the 8th Paris International Dance Competition in 1998; Hong Kong Dance Awards in 1999, 2004 and 2006; the Silver Award in the Modern Dance Section at the 1st Italy International Dance Competition in 2001; and a 2nd Class Award in Choreography at the 5th National Dance Competition. He was also cited as one of the "Top Ten National Performers" in 1996 and was named a "Star of the Century" by the Guangdong Provincial Government in 1997. His recent major choreography works have included "Stranger Than Fiction", "The Conqueror", "Nijinsky" and "Out of the Box". He is currently the Resident Artist with City Contemporary Dance Company.
In December, the series will stage its second programme, "Dialogue", by choreographers Pewan Chow and Jo Leung, whose dance performance explores the paradoxes in communications. Moving between familiarity and unfamiliarity, the two choreographers create half the performance on their own before exchanging works for the other's input for a month. After that, they switch back and the original choreographer finalises the dance. The performance opens a window on creative dialogue in dance-making, allowing for further possibilities in knowing oneself and in communication.
In January 2012, the final programme in the series is "Moving/Void" by choreographers Francis Leung and Cai Ying, an exploratory exercise on the hidden aesthetics of Chinese dance. In this presentation two modern dancers of different generations, Francis Leung and Cai Ying, will work with multi-disciplinary performance artist Hoyingfung. Together they seek the virtuosity of live art and the innovative contexts buried in traditional Chinese dance. Impromptu musicians Lui Ngao Yuen and Wong Hinyan will join folk singer Peng Zhang and the designers Moon Yip and Bert Wong in weaving in and out of the moving void, presenting a mesmerising tapestry in the making, live on stage.
