Catch the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the stars at Victoria Harbour
***********************************************************

The legendary Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will meet the Hong Kong audience again for a concert at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Tickets for the concert sold out on the opening day of sales. To provide an opportunity for more music lovers to enjoy this spectacular music event, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will have an outdoor relay of the concert at the Piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The concert will start at 8pm on October 9 (Sunday).

Under the baton of the great conductor Christoph Eschenbach and with the distinguished baritone Matthias Goerne, the Orchestra will perform Brahms' "Tragic Overture", Schubert's "Symphony No. 8, 'Unfinished'" and Mahler's 11 songs from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn".

Over the course of its more than 160 years of history, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has been the most prominent orchestra in the capital city of music. With its unique tradition, history and associations, the orchestra is undoubtedly one of the finest orchestras in the world. Richard Wagner described the orchestra as being one of the most outstanding in the world, Anton Bruckner called it "the most superior musical association", Johannes Brahms counted himself as a "friend and admirer", Gustav Mahler said it was joined together through "the bonds of musical art", and Richard Strauss summarised all these sentiments by saying, "All praise of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra reveals itself as understatement."

Admission to the live telecast of the concert at the Piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre is free on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission starts from 6.30pm. A 45-minute pre-concert talk conducted by music columnist Dr Oliver Chou (in Cantonese), sharing the splendid history of the orchestra, will be presented before the telecast.

The department has also invited primary and secondary school students to enjoy the live relay through enrolment in the School Culture Day Scheme.

The concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The performance is sponsored by Mr Albert Hung, Mr Wilfred Ng and Mr Raymond Leung.
