Chow Fan-fu to share the music in his life

     Chow Fan-fu, a renowned music critic in Hong Kong, the Mainland, Macau and Chinese Taipei, will continue his popular lectures with a new angle in "Music Appreciation Series ¡V Music in My Life" Part One (conducted in Cantonese). Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, this lecture series, which looks at how music changes our lives, will run from October until January 2012. Part Two will then continue until March 2012.

     In this series of lectures, Chow will share with the audience the music that has been significant in his life, as well as the ways in which this music has influenced and changed him. Chow will also show how music, in its various mysterious ways, changes our lives.

     The ten lectures include folk songs, western and Chinese classics, Christmas carols, orchestral music, ballet music, waltzes, violin and choral music. Some have already been introduced in previous lectures, but Chow will go even deeper to explore the mystery of these pieces.

October 26 (Wednesday)
Topic: L. V. Beethoven: "Symphony No 9" - The simple beauty of a folk song melody.

November 2 (Wednesday)
Topic: Huang Zi: "Original Story"/"Benshi" - The innocence and imaginativeness of a child's heart.

November 9 (Wednesday)
Topic: Neapolitan Folk Song: "Torna a Surriento" and "O Sole Mio" - A moving voice which is capable of changing one's life.

November 16 (Wednesday)
Topic: P. I. Tchaikovsky: Music from Act 2, "Swan Lake Suites" - The elegance and nobility of the music that nourish the heart.

November 23 (Wednesday)
Topic: J. Strauss: "The Blue Danube" - Romantic imagination - that's what dreams are made of.

November 30 (Wednesday)
Topic: W. A. Mozart: Minuet (3rd Movement, Serenade in G major, K525) - Genuine interest and beauty, amazing classical elegance.

December 7 (Wednesday)
Topic: Handel: "Hallelujah Chorus" from Messiah - The sublimation of human sentiments approaches the divine.

December 21 (Wednesday)
Topic: I. Berlin: "White Christmas" - Changes in season remind one of old friendships.

December 28 (Wednesday)
Topic: Bizet: "Toreador Song" from Opera "Carmen" - Grandeur and robustness of emotions, coupled with cruel courage.

January 4, 2012 (Wednesday)
Topic: Massenet: "Meditation" - A moving work that earns the tears of all.

     The lectures will be held at 7.30pm in the Hong Kong Space Museum Lecture Hall. Tickets priced at $50 (each lecture) for "Music Appreciation Series - Music in My Life" Part One are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking.
