In support of the public engagement process on "Combating Climate Change: Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction in Buildings", the Council for Sustainable Development (the Council) today (September 24) officially launched an online carbon emission calculation system. Commissioned by the Council, the Hong Kong Productivity Council developed the web-based carbon management tool, named "Carbon Manager", which is suitable for use in Hong Kong.
The Chairman of the Council, Mr Bernard Chan, said that reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions is the focus of the current public engagement process. In this context, the user-friendly Carbon Manager can help the public to better understand their energy consumption patterns and carbon emission levels as well as assist them in implementing practical and effective energy reduction measures. With the launch of Carbon Manager, the Council hopes to further encourage more trades and industries to conduct energy-cum-carbon audits to assess their energy consumption and carbon emissions, and to take appropriate mitigating measures.
Tailor-made for core building user groups in Hong Kong, including households, offices, retail and catering, Carbon Manager simply requires users to input relevant information for calculating their carbon footprint. Carbon Manager can assess users' energy consumption performance with reference to the building user group they belong to, and provide relevant and effective energy saving and carbon reduction recommendations. The application can also estimate the potential carbon emissions reduction if such recommendations are implemented.
