EPD to hold exhibitions on waste management strategies (with photos)

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has launched a series of roving exhibitions on the imminent waste problem faced by Hong Kong and the corresponding strategies to tackle it.

The Under Secretary for the Environment, Dr Kitty Poon, who visited the exhibition being held at Amoy Plaza today (September 23) said, "Our current waste management strategy relies heavily on landfills, which will approach their capacities one by one in the next three to 10 years. Through informative and interactive displays, the exhibition seeks to prompt members of the public to think about our next steps in managing Hong Kong's imminent waste problem."

At present, about 13 300 tonnes of waste are disposed of at landfills every day. As the three existing landfills are expected to reach capacity one by one from 2014 onwards, Hong Kong has an urgent need to enhance its waste management systems to solve the waste problem in the longer term.

The exhibition highlights the importance of a multi-pronged approach to managing waste. The three main aspects are waste avoidance, recycling and reduction at source; the extension of landfills in a timely manner to handle non-recyclables and ashes left over from the treatment process by modern facilities; and the introduction of modern technology to reduce the overall volume of waste and recover energy from waste.

Besides informative display panels, the exhibition utilises interactive touch-screen electronic games and an Augmented Reality (AR) game that guides visitors through the main points of various strategies, including a demonstration of the operation of a modern incineration facility.

The roving exhibitions will be held across Hong Kong between September and November and are open to the public from 11am to 8pm. Details are as follows:
