Contractor fined for violation of safety rule

     Wai Ming Construction Steel Limited was fined $35,000 at Eastern Magistrates' Court today (September 23) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on September 18 last year at a construction site in Sai Wan in which a worker fixing steel bars for a reinforcement structure at a floor edge fell to his death when the structure suddenly collapsed.  

     According to Sections 6A(2)(a) and 6A(3) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the proprietor shall provide and maintain a system of work that is, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risk to the health of the persons employed.  Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000.
