Contractors fined for violation of safety rules

     Gammon Construction Limited and Ho Wah Steel Engineering Co Limited were each fined $20,000 at Eastern Magistrates' Court today (September 16) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on February 22 this year at a construction site at Pok Fu Lam, in which a worker was struck on the head by a steel bracket during dismantling, and subsequently died.

     According to Sections 6A(2)(a), 6A(3) and 13(1) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the proprietor shall provide and maintain a system of work that is, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risk to the health of the persons employed. Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000.
