Nominations for District Council election to open on Thursday
*****************************************************

Nominations for the 2011 District Council election will start on Thursday (September 15). The two-week nomination period will run until September 28.

A total of 412 elected members, one for each of the 412 constituencies in the 18 Districts, will be returned. For a contested constituency, the poll will be conducted on November 6.

A spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) today (September 12) advised nominees to submit their nominations as early as possible to allow time to correct any mistakes in the nomination forms before the deadline.

"A nominee must be a registered geographical constituency elector aged 21 or above who has ordinarily resided in Hong Kong for the three years immediately before his or her nomination. Details on the eligibility for nomination as a candidate are set out in section 20 of the District Councils Ordinance," the spokesman said.

"Nominees must submit in person the completed nomination form and an election deposit of $3,000 to the respective Returning Officer within the nomination period. A nomination form must be subscribed by 10 registered electors of the constituency concerned. Each elector may subscribe only one nomination," he said.

The District Officers of the 18 Districts have been appointed as the Returning Officers for the election in their respective districts. Nominations will be accepted between 9am and 5pm from Mondays to Fridays and between 9am and noon on Saturdays.

Nomination forms can be obtained at the District Offices and the REO Office at 10/F, Harbour Centre, 25 Harbour Road, Wan Chai, or downloaded from the REO website (www.reo.gov.hk).
