******************************************************

The International Students' Visual Arts Contest-cum-Exhibition of Hong Kong - Photography (2011), co-presented by the Education Bureau (EDB) and the Po Leung Kuk, received about 2,000 entries from 33 countries or regions - a record number of participating countries or regions for any such Hong Kong-based art competition.

A total of 48 winning entries will be on display at the Exhibition Gallery at 4/F of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui, between tomorrow (August 16) and August 24, from 10am to 7pm. Admission is free.

Themed "Capturing Eternity", the contest aimed to encourage young people to express their perceptions and thoughts about eternity through photography, so as to develop their creativity, broaden their perspectives and deepen their artistic thinking. The presenters of the contest also hoped that the international event would promote cross-cultural exchanges and help adults to have a better understanding of young people through appreciating their photographic works.

The contest was open to all primary and secondary students all over the world studying in primary four or above. Aged between 11 and 18, 12 contestants from nine countries or regions were awarded the Hong Kong Grand Prize.

These students are from the Czech Republic, New Zealand, Greece, Turkey, South Africa, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Canada and Hong Kong. The Hong Kong winner, Fung Hiu-laam, is an 18-year-old student studying in Po Leung Kuk C W Chu College. Another 36 students were awarded Honourable Mentions.

The participants' varied cultural backgrounds yielded a wide variety of photographic styles and approaches, especially in works of the 12 Hong Kong Grand Prize-winning entrants.

Among them, Fung Hiu-laam chose an image displaying energetic rhythm while a winner from the Czech Republic selected a photographic approach to capture the static nuances of light.

The adjudicators of this contest included renowned photographers, artists, art critics and art educators from around the world. A prize presentation ceremony for winners will be held on August 20.
