2011 Population Census fieldwork completes
******************************************

The face-to-face interview phase of the 2011 Population Census ended today (August 2).

The Commissioner for Census and Statistics, Mr Fung Hing-wang, expressed his appreciation to members of the public for their support and co-operation. He also expressed his sincere thanks to all those who participated with dedication during the operation, including the some 18 000 temporary field workers and staff of the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD).

During the 34-day census period, about 2.1 million households provided the required census information. Among these households, around 1.4 million households provided the information via the self-enumeration mode by returning postal questionnaires or completing e-Questionnaires.

"For around 300 000 households that have not completed questionnaires via the self-enumeration mode and that we have not been able to contact despite repeated attempts during the 18-day face-to-face interview period, our census officers have left questionnaires with them," he added. The households concerned are requested to complete and return the questionnaires in the self-addressed envelopes to the C&SD by August 15.

The Telephone Enquiry Centre of the 2011 Population Census has handled more than 160 000 public enquiries since its start of operation in late June. The telephone enquiry service will remain in operation until August 15. The service hours of the centre from August 3 until August 15 will be 9am to 6pm from Mondays to Fridays.

The capturing and processing of census information collected is under way. The C&SD may contact individual households that have provided census information by phone on or before August 15 for verification in order to ensure that the information recorded is accurate. The phone number of the Telephone Enquiry Centre (2153 2011) will be displayed for all calls made by the C&SD for this purpose.

All information pertaining to individual persons or households collected during the census operation will be treated in strict confidence and used solely for statistical purposes. All completed questionnaires will be destroyed within 12 months of the commencement of the census.
