**********************************************************

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) held a publicity event and roving exhibition on the Extension of the Environmental Levy Scheme on Plastic Shopping Bags (PSBs) in Tin Chak Shopping Centre, Tin Shui Wai, today (July 30).

"The Government is seeking the public's views on the Extension of the Environmental Levy Scheme on PSBs. Through exhibitions and games, we hope that the public can further enhance their understanding of the scheme and come forward to give their views on its extension," a spokesman for the EPD said.

"The Environmental Levy Scheme on PSBs was implemented on July 7, 2009, as the first statutory producer responsibility scheme under the Product Eco-responsibility Ordinance. It has achieved remarkable results since its implementation with a 90 per cent reduction in the number of PSBs distributed by registered retailers," the spokesman added.

During today's event, artistes shared tips on green living and took part in games with the audience, while a green group used role play to urge the public to stop the indiscriminate use of PSBs. The event has received an enthusiastic response from residents.

The roving exhibition is being held at Zone A, Tin Chak Shopping Centre, Tin Shui Wai, from noon to 8pm today and tomorrow.

Leaflets on the public consultation are obtainable at the exhibition venue. The consultation document is available on the EPD website at www.epd.gov.hk. The public may forward their views and comments to the EPD by post (EPD Waste Management Policy Division, Room 4522, 45/F, Revenue Tower, 5 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai), email (psbprs@epd.gov.hk) or facsimile (2318 1877) on or before August 16.
