Learning to play a musical instrument through a comprehensive training course not only helps young people to develop their potential and talent in music, but also enhances their interest in the arts.
The Instrumental Music Training Scheme and the School Instrumental Music Training Scheme, organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, are now recruiting beginners for the 2011-12 series. Young people with no experience in playing musical instruments are welcome to apply.
The Instrumental Music Training Scheme, which provides training in more than 20 Western and Chinese musical instruments, including violin, viola, cello, harp, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, French horn, trombone, erhu, pipa, zhongruan, liuyeqin, sheng and suona, with supplementary training in musicianship and theory, is inviting applications from children aged 6 to 14.
The two-year elementary training courses, which will begin in November, will be conducted at the Music Office's five music centres in Wan Chai, Kwun Tong, Mong Kok, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan.
The School Instrumental Music Training Scheme, which will also begin in November, is inviting applications from children aged 6 to 12 for elementary pipa, liuyeqin and flute classes to be held at Tin Shui Wai Xianggang Putonghua Yanxishe Primary School of Science and Creativity.
Weekly one-hour group lessons will be conducted in Cantonese for both schemes. Annual tuition fees of $1,350 for the first year and $1,650 for the second year are to be paid in four instalments. The deadline for applications is August 8.
Applicants for both schemes will be required to attend an admission test that consists of a music aptitude test and an interview.
Pamphlets and application forms for both schemes are now available at all music centres of the Music Office. They can also be downloaded from the Music Office website: www.lcsd.gov.hk/CE/CulturalService/MusicOffice/en/index.php. Completed applications can be submitted by post or in person. Applications for the Instrumental Music Training Scheme can also be submitted through the online application system.
