SHA visits Kwai Tsing District (with photos)
********************************************

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, visited Kwai Tsing District today (July 21) to learn about the views of local residents on community facilities.

Visiting the popular Cheung Fat Estate Community Centre and Lai King Community Hall this afternoon, Mr Tsang chatted with residents participating in a dancing class and a Tai Chi class to listen to their views on the facilities of the two premises.

The five-storey Cheung Fat Estate Community Centre has a hall with a maximum capacity of 370 seats and two activity rooms on the ground floor for hiring by local groups while other floors are also rented out to different welfare groups, providing a wide range of services. In addition, the Lai King Community Hall has a hall with a maximum capacity of 230 seats and an activity room.

To provide better services for the community, Mr Tsang said the Home Affairs Department had used District Minor Works (DMW) funds to upgrade facilities in these premises. Apart from enhancing stage facilities, lighting and public address systems, works such as the installation of projectors have already been completed. Other improvement works like the installation of noise-insulating windows will also be carried out.

Mr Tsang noted that community halls had all along been well received by the local residents. The continuous improvement of these facilities will encourage more district organisations to organise a wider variety of activities to cater to residents' needs.

This afternoon, Mr Tsang was also briefed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department on the characteristics of Tsing Hung Road Playground in Tsing Yi. Occupying an area of about 2,600 square metres, the playground is one of the key DMW projects opened to the public in 2010 and comprises facilities like a cycling track, play equipment for children, a Tai Chi area and walking tiles as well as covered sitting-out areas.

"The SAR Government attaches great importance to community building. We will continue to work closely with District Councils and district organisations to listen to their views so as to enhance the standards of our facilities," he said.

Mr Tsang also attended a forum organised by a local organisation to garner residents' views on the living environment in the district.
