Personal safety of census officers of the Population Census
***********************************************************

In response to a recent discussion thread on an online forum regarding an alleged rape incident involving a female census officer, the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) today (July 21) clarified that there was no such incident.

The C&SD has provided census officers with safety guidelines, reminding them to exercise vigilance and caution to ensure their personal safety and to invoke contingency steps in case of emergency. Census officers are always reminded that their personal safety is of utmost importance.

At the planning stage of the 2011 Population Census, the C&SD took the initiative to consult the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) to draw up various safety measures relating to the conduct of fieldwork. The C&SD is in close liaison with the HKPF during the census operation to ensure the personal safety of census officers and will review and enhance such measures as necessary.
