********************************************************

The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region welcomes and fully supports Dr Margaret Chan's announcement to run for a second term as Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, said today (July 12).  The Central People's Government has announced earlier today its decision to endorse Dr Chan as a candidate for the post.

"We take pride in the nomination of an outstanding public health official from Hong Kong," Mr Tsang said.

Dr Chan has worked in the Hong Kong civil service for 25 years before she retired as the Director of Health in 2003.  She subsequently joined the WHO and was appointed to the post of Director-General in 2006.  Her current term will last until June 2012.

"Dr Chan worked tirelessly to promote the development of public health services in Hong Kong, and has been using her expertise to serve the global community in the context of the World Health Organization over the past few years," Mr Tsang said.

"We wish Dr Chan every success in the campaign," Mr Tsang added.
