Following intensive training from renowned Chinese and overseas musicians at the 2011 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp, over 400 young musicians will perform a variety of Chinese and Western music at two afternoon concerts in July and August.
The first concert will be held at 3pm on July 31 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall, with performances by the Camp Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Junior Chinese Orchestra.
Highlights of the programme include Kuan Nai-chung's "Darkened Sky" from "Scenery of Taiwan", with music full of festival spirit; the well-known Chinese folk song "Jasmine"; Peng Xiuwen's folk dance piece "Moon Dance of Axi"; Susato's symphonic suite "Selections from 'The Danserye'"; Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2"; and Shostakovich's "Symphony No. 5 in D minor, 4th movement".
The second concert, to be performed by the Camp Youth Choir, Chinese Orchestra and Junior String Orchestra, will be held at 3pm on August 7 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Sha Tin Town Hall.
The programme includes popular American composer Eric Whitacre's "Five Hebrew Love Songs", which were written to express his love for his wife; Handel's "Your Voices Tune", from "Alexander's Feast"; Respighi's "Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 3, 1st & 4th movements", which are full of baroque guitar style music; and Lee Ying's "Fantasy of Yi", featuring the natural phenomenon and philosophy of life.
The conductors of the concerts are Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Texas at Arlington (USA), Dr Clifton Evans; Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble (USA), Mr Simon Tillier; Associate Professor of the Chinese Music Department of the Tainan National University of Arts (Taiwan), Dr Ku Pao Wen; Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities of St Mary's College, Indiana (USA), Dr Nancy Menk; Associate Conductor of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra (Taiwan), Mr Lee Ying; and Founder of the Shenzhen Youth Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra (China), Mr Wang Jiayang.
Presented by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the 2011 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp Concerts are part of the summer extravaganza International Arts Carnival 2011.
The Hong Kong Youth Music Camp is one of the Music Office's major summer music activities, providing intensive training for young musicians aged between 10 and 25 in the surroundings of a scenic campsite. Participating musicians are also encouraged to join in recreational and sports activities at the camp.
Tickets priced at $80, $60 and $40 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessionary tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
