CHP investigates Legionnaires' Disease case

     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating a confirmed case of Legionnaires' Disease involving a 77-year-old man living in Tuen Mun.

     The patient, who had underlying medical illness, presented with malaise and muscle ache since July 6. He then developed fever and shortness of breath on July 8. He sought medical consultation and was admitted to St Paul's Hospital on July 9. The patient is now in stable condition.

     Urine tests revealed that the patient was infected with Legionella bacteria.

     The patient had no recent travel history during the incubation period. His home contact is asymptomatic.

     Investigation is ongoing.

     This is the sixth case of Legionnaires' Disease reported to CHP this year. Twenty cases were filed in 2010, 37 in 2009, 13 in 2008 and 11 in 2007.
