New programmes for Outreach Music Interest Courses

     A new series of Outreach Music Interest Courses, organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), is now open for applications. Over 100 courses, varying from Chinese and Western musical instrument classes to diverse music workshops, will offer interesting and educational content for applicants of all ages, from adults to children.

     The courses, conducted in Cantonese, will be held from September to January next year.

     There will be two new workshop options this term in the Music Appreciation Series. The first is "World of Operas", which introduces the history, development and classification of operas, world renowned opera singers and the production of operas. The other is "The Great Violin Maestros of the Past", will introduce different schools of violin playing as well as the virtuoso playing techniques of prominent violinists from Vivaldi to Stern and their influences on the development of violin music.

     Other regular workshop series include guitar, ukulele, hulusi, and keyboard playing, vocal singing, sight-singing and aural skills, Western music theory and ensemble playing series on Chinese ensembles, string ensembles and saxophone ensembles. All are available for different age groups. The course fees for the workshop series range from $240 to $600.

     To provide short-term basic music training for all ages, the Outreach Music Interest Courses also provide Chinese and Western elementary music classes on dizi, xiao, liuyeqin, pipa, zhong-ruan, yangqin, zheng, erhu, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, percussion, violin, viola and cello. The course fee is $800.

     The courses will be held in small group at different venues throughout Hong Kong. They are the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Sha Tin Town Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, Tuen Mun Town Hall, North District Town Hall, Sheung Wan Civic Centre, Sai Wan Ho Civil Centre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre, Tai Po Civic Centre, Kwai Tsing Theatre, Yuen Long Theatre, Ko Shan Theatre, Hong Kong Central Library, Pei Ho Street Sports Centre (Sham Shui Po), Yeung Uk Road Sports Centre (Tsuen Wan) and the Music Officeˇ¦s five music centres at Wan Chai, Mong Kok, Kwun Tong, Shatin and Tsuen Wan.

     Online applications are now available at the Music Office's website www.lcsd.gov.hk/musicoffice. Course prospectuses and application forms are also available at all performing venues of the LCSD and all music centres of the Music Office. The deadline for applications is July 22. Oversubscribed courses will be processed by ballot. For courses not fully taken up, applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis from August 19.
