Members of Legislative Council's Panel on Commerce and Industry visited the Hong Kong Science Park today (July 7) to learn about its development, in particular the technological achievements of research and development (R&D) centres set up with the support of the Innovation and Technology Commission.

The members were briefed by Chairman of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Mr Nicholas Brooke, and its Chief Executive Officer, Mr E Anthony Tan, on the Park's latest developments, including the progress of Phase 3 and the environmentally friendly building, Green 18, which newly opened in May this year.

Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), Dr Nim Cheung, updated the members on the Institute's development and technological achievements. He described how R&D technologies developed by the Institute have been successfully applied in everyday life, such as LED street lighting which is in use in several Mainland cities; second generation e-reader "PAL" used in e-learning; the compact anti-shaking camera utility, and the telehealth platform used by community nurses while making home visits.

During their visit to the Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI), members were briefed by Chief Executive Officer, Professor Ka Ming Ng on the R&D centre's successful application of nano technology in thin film silicon solar panels, air purifiers using LED mood lighting and the fast-response humidity sensor.

Professor Ng said the primary mission of NAMI was to bridge the gap between upstream technology research and industrial application. Its focus on five market sectors - sustainable energy, display and solid state lighting, construction/building materials, environmental technologies and medical and healthcare products - has proven compatible with the needs of industries in Hong Kong and the Mainland.

The ASTRI and NAMI were among the five R&D centres set up by the Government in 2006 to drive and co-ordinate applied R&D in selected focus areas and to promote the commercialisation of R&D results.

To enhance the efforts of the Science Park and other institutes in achieving innovation and technology results, the Innovation and Technology Commission has been promoting the trial use of R&D centre technologies in government departments and non-government organisations, such as LED lamps in the Highways Department and the Housing Department, and the "my ID" e-reader and e-learning systems with "Peer to Peer" and "Mobile Internet Device" technologies in schools.

The Legislative Council members also visited the Charles K. Kao Auditorium, "Professor Charles K. Kao : Father of Fibre Optics" Showcase and the Science Park's new building, Green 18. Green 18 is an eight-storey, environmentally friendly and energy efficient building located in Phase 2 of Hong Kong Science Park, and has been designed to showcase green technologies.

Operational since 2002, the 22-hectare Hong Kong Science Park is divided into three construction phases, of which Phases 1 and 2 are already complete. It currently comprises 20 laboratory-fitted buildings offering a gross floor area of 220 000 square metres. Construction of Phase 3 is expected to commence in the second half of this year for completion in stages between 2013 and 2016.
