The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present the third public lecture this year under the theme "Areas of Excellence" this Saturday (July 9) at the Hong Kong Science Museum.
Co-organised with the Hong Kong Science Museum, the RGC has invited Dr Hui Wai Haan Chair of Chemistry, University of Hong Kong, Professor Che Chi-ming; and Chair Professor in the Division of Life Science, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Professor Nancy Ip; to introduce and share their research findings with the public on their approved projects under the Areas of Excellence Scheme funded by the University Grants Committee. Professor Che is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is the first and the only scholar from Hong Kong so far to have received a first-class award of the State Natural Science Award. Professor Che will present a talk on "Chemical Biology: Anti-Cancer Gold Drugs and Traditional Chinese Medicine". Using two novel gold drugs as examples for the treatment of late stage cancers, Professor Che will illustrate the work and innovative interdisciplinary research of his team in chemical biology, advanced biological mass spectrometry and green chemistry.
Professor Ip is also a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a laureate of the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award. Professor Ip will deliver a lecture titled "From Neuroscience Discoveries to Promoting Human Health". She will introduce leading edge research on the molecular mechanisms underlying learning and memory, as well as the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. The lecture will highlight the achievements of her inter-institutional, multidisciplinary project team in enhancing human understanding of the brain.
Since 1999, the Areas of Excellence Scheme has been in place to facilitate the formation of quality research consortia to explore important questions across a broad range of disciplines, and thus it buttresses inter-institutional and inter-disciplinary collaborative links. So far, five Areas of Excellence exercises have been undertaken, and over HK$940 million has been allocated to 15 Areas of Excellence projects.
