Update on cluster of Parainfluenza Virus Type 3 cases in a male mentally handicapped ward of Tuen Mun Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding the announcement earlier on a cluster of patients confirmed positive for Parainfluenza Virus Type 3 in a male ward for the mentally handicapped, the spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following update today (July 6):

     Two more patients (aged 28 and 61) in the ward had presented with respiratory infection symptoms. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients. One of them tested positive for Parainfluenza Virus Type 3, while the results for the remaining patient are pending. The patients concerned are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition.

     Admission to and discharge from the ward have been suspended. Restricted visiting to the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
