As tickets for the Hong Kong Film Archive's (HKFA) previously announced "Restored Treasures: Lola Montès" screening have sold out, an additional show will be held on July 15 at 7.30pm at the HKFA's Cinema.
Max Ophüls, an influential German-born director, was an auteur before the idea of auteurism existed, a globalist before globalism was a catchphrase and a "womenist" before feminism was valued. Ophüls made nearly 30 films. His works feature distinctive stylish camera movements, with complex crane and tracking shots that gave rise to one of the most extravagant, evocative, powerful and distinct bodies of work in cinema history.
Starring Martine Carol and Peter Ustinov, "Lola Montès" (1955), the last work of Ophüls and his only film in colour, is so rich in style and emotions that it demands repeated viewings, with fresh insights guaranteed each time. Based on the life of the beautiful courtesan Lola Montès, the masterpiece is an ornately orchestrated film that confronts the ideas of romance, womanhood and fascination with celebrity. The film was met with scorn during its initial release and was subsequently butchered. Some of the original materials were lost as a result. The digitally restored version shown at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, with most of the missing footage reinstated, is being screened at the HKFA.

Priced at $50, tickets for the additional screening are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessionary tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 and above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
