Cluster of Parainfluenza Virus Type 3 cases in a male mentally handicapped ward of Tuen Mun Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement today (June 30):

     Four patients aged 20 to 27 and a staff member at a male mentally handicapped ward of TMH had presented with respiratory symptoms since June 25. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and their test results were positive for Parainfluenza Virus Type 3. The patients concerned are being treated under isolation. Two patients are in serious condition and the other two are in stable condition. The staff member concerned has recovered and has resumed duty.

     Admission to and discharge from the ward have been suspended. Restricted visiting to the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up measures.
