Employer fined for violation of safety rule

     Brigantine Services Limited was fined $10,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court today (June 28) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident which occurred on September 12 last year at a workplace at Tsing Yi, in which a worker was knocked down by a container truck and subsequently died.

     According to Section 6(2)(a) and 6(2)(c) of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, the employer shall, so far as is reasonably practicable, provide and maintain a system of work and provide such information, instruction, training and supervision as necessary to ensure the safety and health at work of the employees.

     Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000.
