SWD attends to welfare needs of blaze victims (with photos)

     The Director of Social Welfare, Mr Patrick Nip, today (June 16) visited the Sheng Kung Hui Holy Carpenter Church Community Centre in Hung Hom, where he expressed his deep concern and sympathy to the families affected by a No 3 alarm fire in Ma Tau Wai Road. He was also briefed on the inter-departmental support measures for the blaze victims.

     "Subsequent to the yesterday's emergency measures, the Social Welfare Department (SWD) today continues to render support to the affected residents, including the provision of meals, daily necessities and counselling services. Special arrangements have been made to dispatch medicine to elders and sick persons. Social workers are looking into and following up the welfare needs of individual families," Mr Nip said.

     "As for the two families with tragic loss of lives and casualties, medical social workers at hospitals and the Integrated Family Service Centre concerned will join forces to render necessary assistance in the areas of burial service, medical care, rehabilitation and long-term welfare-related arrangements."

     In addition to members of the SWD, other Government departments and non-Governmental organisations who had made every effort to support the affected residents, Mr Nip also expressed thanks to donors and charitable organisations. To date, donations to the affected families are as follows:
 
* Lok Sin Tong Caring Fund - $5,000 for each family/ $55,000 for family with death case(s)
* Yan Chai Emergency Assistance Relief Fund - $3,000 for each family/$36,000 and $12,000 for the two families with death cases respectively
* General Chinese Charities Fund - $2,000 for each family/ $8,000 for family with death case(s)
* Sik Sik Yuen Emergency Fund - $3,000 for each family/ donation for family with death cases still pending
* A donor (anonymous) - $2,000 for each family/ $5,000 for family with death case(s)

     Mr Nip added that all the departments concerned would continue to attend to the needs of the affected families and help them solve the problems they faced.
