Meet mud wrestlers at Hong Kong Wetland Park (with photos)
**********************************************************

A thematic event entitled "Meet the Mud Wrestlers" to be held at the Hong Kong Wetland Park from today (June 11) until September 5 will lead visitors of all ages to get closer to fiddler crabs and horseshoe crabs this summer.

Despite being named as crabs, fiddler crabs and horseshoe crabs are biologically dissimilar. The thematic event offers visitors an opportunity to learn more about the two species through exhibition panels. Live fiddler crabs and horseshoe crabs are also displayed for visitors to observe the species' features closely.

Fiddler crabs are a common species in the park and they can often be seen along the Mangrove Boardwalk during low tide. Male fiddler crabs have a pair of claws but one claw is much larger than the other. They use the large claws for defending territory and attracting females, and use the small claws for feeding. In addition to the commonly found Uca arcuata, the park has recorded four other fiddler crab species, namely Uca borealis, Uca crassipes, Uca paradussumieri and Uca acuta, for the first time in a recent ecological survey. Visitors can better appreciate the fiddler crabs along the Mangrove Boardwalk after browsing the thematic exhibition.

Horseshoe crabs are regarded as "living fossils" and have been living on earth for over 300 million years, long before the dinosaurs appeared. Horseshoe crabs are classified as Merostomata in taxonomy; they do not belong to the family of crabs but are relatives of spiders and scorpions. Horseshoe crabs have a unique body structure, and a long telson that is used for turning the body over instead of defence. The blood of horseshoe crabs will turn blue when copper in the blood oxidises in air.

To add extra fun, the park will arrange drama performances entitled "The Gorgeous Encounter" during the event period. The show is a story about a fiddler crab who thinks himself superior to others and decides to challenge the legendary champion horseshoe crab. During the journey in his quest, he learns the meaning of survival in nature. A tremendous secret will also be revealed.

Wetland Park mascot Mr Fiddler Crab will make a special appearance and distribute limited-edition souvenirs to visitors. With a wide spectrum of activities, "Meet the Mud Wrestlers" is a must-visit event for those seeking a refreshing and fun experience this summer.
