*************************************************

A delegation led by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, is attending the 12th China International Environmental Protection Exhibition and Conference (CIEPEC 2011), which opened in Beijing today (June 7).

Mr Yau attended the CIEPEC 2011 opening ceremony in the morning and then joined the delegation to tour the CIEPEC 2011 Hong Kong Pavilion and the international and Mainland expo areas. They also took the opportunity to exchange views with representatives of the Mainland's environmental industry.

Thirty-one Hong Kong environmental enterprises and organisations were at  CIEPEC 2011 to showcase their green technology and services, with some promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy, waste and sewage treatment technology and facilities, as well as green materials, accreditation and consultancy services.

Mr Yau said that CIEPEC 2011 and the experience-sharing activities it provides will enable the Hong Kong delegates to gain a better understanding of the latest developments in the Mainland's environmental industry. The conference will also provide a platform for local industries to exhibit their experience and efforts in promoting green industry.

CIEPEC is co-organised biennially in Beijing by six authorities, including the National Ministry of Environmental Protection, National Development and Reform Commission and National Ministry of Science and Technology. With more than 300 enterprises and organisations in the 20,000 square-metre expo area, CIEPEC is the largest eco-exhibition in China. In a bid to promote Hong Kong's green industry and encourage our enterprises to grasp the opportunities arising from the Mainland's development of environmental industries and green economy, the Government subsidised the Hong Kong contingent's trip to the exhibition - the first time it has done so.  The Hong Kong Pavilion was also set up to showcase our environmental technology and services.

Mr Yau will visit the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau on June 8 and 9.
