The artist Ivy Ma is excellent in creating visual art works by abstracting her favourite scenes from the films and novels of many film and literature masters. These art works, made with her unique visual language, allow people to revisit fascinating films and novels, and be drawn into an imaginary world in which they can forget about reality.
Her art works will be on display in an exhibition entitled "Still Lifes and Waves - Works by Ivy Ma", the latest exhibition in "Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme V" organised by the Art Promotion Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The exhibition will be divided into two sessions. The first session will run from June 4 to 21 at the Hong Kong Film Archive and the second part will be held at the Tsimshatsui Book Centre of The Commercial Press from June 24 to July 3.
In 2001, Ivy Ma received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Art from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University in Australia and the Hong Kong Art School. The next year, she received a master's degree from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom and was awarded the Lee Hysan Foundation Fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council in 2007. She participated in various artist-in-residence programmes in Bangladesh, Finland, Åland Archipelago and the United States. Her work was selected for the Hong Kong Art Biennial in 2005 and has been collected by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
The exhibition showcases Ma's visual art works inspired by classic films and novels, including still life drawings, animations, photographs and installations. Through this exhibition, visitors will be able to better appreciate scenes depicted in the classic films of Fei Mu, Yasujiro Ozu and Yoshimitsu Morita and the writing of Virginia Woolf from another perspective. The exhibition's movie-related imagery includes the lily from "And Then" (1985), the orchard from "Spring in a Small Town" (1948) and the plants from "Tokyo Story" (1953). Another series of exhibits is inspired by Virginia Woolf's novel "The Waves" (1931). Ma has rearranged found objects that she picked from the seaside and has added photos to immerse the audience in the inner landscape of the novel.
During the exhibition period, there will be free educational programmes organised by the Art Promotion Office. They include "The Beauty of Still Lifes - Drawing Workshop", which will take place at the Hong Kong Film Archive Exhibition Hall on June 11 from 3.30pm to 4.30pm and Ivy Ma will guide participants to make and decorate their unique still life drawings, and "Talk: Exchange between Film, Text and Visual Arts", which will take place at the Tsimshatsui Book Centre of The Commercial Press on July 3 from 3pm to 4.30pm. Well-known local writer Ms Chan Ning and film critic Mr Matthew Cheng have been invited to talk about the relationship between film, text and visual arts at the talk. Both programmes will be conducted in Cantonese and will have limited seats, so advance application is required.
The Hong Kong Film Archive is located at 50 Lei King Road, Sai Wan Ho, and is open daily from 10am to 8pm except Thursday. The Tsimshatsui Book Center of The Commercial Press is located at Shops B1007-B1010, B1/F, Miramar Shopping Centre, 132 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, and is open from 11am to 9pm from Sunday to Thursday, and from 10am to 9.30pm on Friday and Saturday. The exhibition will be closed from 11am to noon on June 25-26 and July 2.
