Military and Police jointly present celebration concerts (with photos)

     In celebration of the 14th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, the Military Band of the People's Liberation Army and the Hong Kong Police Band will jointly present symphonic concerts on June 30 and July 1 at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

     A press conference was held today (May 30) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre to introduce the programme. Present at the press conference were the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Raymond Young, and representatives of the Military Band of the People's Liberation Army including the Director, Artistic Director and Conductor, Mr Yu Hai; the Associate Director and Conductor, Mr Zhang Haifeng; the Chief Director for the concert, Mr Chou Fei; and chief stage art designer Mr Zhou Danlin. Also present were the Division Chief of the Publicity, Culture and Sports Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr Yuan Junhua; the Deputy Political Commissar of the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, Mr Chu Maohua; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Choral Societies, Ms Barbara Fei; the Assistant Director of Music of Hong Kong Police Band, Samson Li; and the Assistant Director (Performing Arts) of the Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Cynthia Liu.

     As part of this afternoon's press preview, two soloists from the Military Band of the People's Liberation Army and a group of 30 from the Hong Kong Police Band gave demonstration performances.

     Performing in the concerts are the Military Band of the People's Liberation Army, the Hong Kong Police Band, the Military Band of the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison and the Hong Kong Association of Choral Societies. The programme includes "Ode to Mark the Return of Hong Kong to China", "Pearl of the East", "Below the Lion Rock", "March of Military Bearing", "Mambo No. 5" and "Soaring Dragon Leaping Tiger" (with percussion solo by Ronald Chin), etc.

     "Symphonic Concert in Celebration of the 14th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR" will be staged at 8pm on June 30 and July 1 (Thursday and Friday) at the Arena, Queen Elizabeth Stadium. Tickets priced at $100 and $60 (seats with restricted view) will be available from tomorrow at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (Limited tickets for full time students and CSSA recipients). On the first counter booking day (May 31), each patron can purchase up to a maximum of 20 tickets per transaction.

     The concerts are presented by the Government of the HKSAR, organised by the Home Affairs Bureau, coordinated by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and supported by the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR, the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison and the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army.

     In addition to the concerts to be staged at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, an outdoor performance will be held at 4pm on July 2 (Saturday) at Piazza C, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Admission will be free.
