Employer fined for violation of safety rule

     Sagawa Express (H.K.) Company Limited was fined $20,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court today (May 23) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident that occurred in Chek Lap Kok on August 25 last year, in which a worker was trapped to death between two cargoes.

     According to Section 6(2)(a) of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, every employer shall provide or maintain a system of work that are, so far as reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to health. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000.
