Police yesterday (May 19) concluded a two-week territory-wide pedestrian road safety campaign. Through education and publicity in the first week and stringent enforcement actions in the second week, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.
A total of 463 verbal warnings and 971 summonses were issued to pedestrians during the campaign conducted from May 6 to 19.
During the above period, Police issued 685 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 108 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge or pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge or pedestrian subway, and 103 summonses for climbing over or through kerbside fence or central reservation onto a carriageway.
Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams had distributed around 22,000 publicity leaflets at 721 locations across the territory and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.
"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely. Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
