School cultural schemes to enhance arts education
*************************************************

Organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), a briefing session for the School Culture Day Scheme, the School Arts Animateur Scheme, the Arts Experience Scheme for Senior Secondary Students and the Arts Criticism Project for Senior Secondary Students was held today (May 16) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The briefing session was attended by representatives from numerous primary, secondary and special schools.

Heidi Chu, Senior Manager (Audience Building) of the LCSD, and Tai Kit-man, Chief Curriculum Development Officer of the Education Bureau, as well as representatives of arts groups who participate in the School Arts Animateur Scheme, the Arts Experience Scheme for Senior Secondary Students and the Arts Criticism Project for Senior Secondary Students were present to introduce details of all the schemes.

The School Culture Day Scheme aims to encourage schools to arrange for their students to visit the LCSD's performance venues, museums and libraries during school hours over a span of one school year, to take part in various cultural activities specially designed for them. These educational and interesting activities not only enable the students to experience the boundless joy of arts and culture, but also help enhance their individual self-cultivation through exposure to the arts. In the 10 school years since the scheme was launched, over 900 existing schools, with an aggregate attendance of over 1.15 million, have participated in the scheme.

The LCSD has been joining with a number of local professional arts groups experienced in arts education to organise the School Arts Animateur Scheme, which aims to sow the seeds of the arts in schools by enabling more students to get in touch with the arts. During the 2011-12 academic year, the scheme will offer 12 projects covering music, dance, musical theatre, drama, Cantonese opera and multimedia arts education. In addition, it will organise creativity camps, stage technique demonstrations, script reading workshops, appreciation of professional performance, Students' Performances for the Community, training workshop series lasting from seven to 16 months and finale performances for the workshop participants. The department will also organise introductory performances, music composition lectures, Dance Day and parent-child workshops, as well as Cantonese opera make-up and costume demonstrations at the participating schools.

The Arts Experience Scheme for Senior Secondary Students is organised to tie in with the implementation of aesthetic development under the new senior secondary school curriculum. It is hoped that with the popularisation of arts education, teenagers will get in touch with the arts and learn to respect and appreciate the arts through participation. In the 2011-12 academic year, the scheme will offer 22 programmes covering various art forms, including dance, drama, music, Chinese opera and multi-arts, with each programme complemented by tailor-made extension activities.

The Arts Criticism Project for Senior Secondary Students is a newly introduced scheme targeting senior secondary students. The scheme aims to enhance arts appreciation and stimulate capability for analysis among youngsters. It also ties in with the implementation of aesthetic development under the new senior secondary school curriculum, intended to foster students' creative thinking and broaden their horizons.
