Still rejoicing in the success of its "devising theatre" productions "Seven Boxes Possessed of Kafka" and "1001 Nights of Pasolini", locally based Alice Theatre Laboratory will next month (June) stage another devising production, "One Hundred Years of Solitude".
"One Hundred Years of Solitude" is a renowned story of magical realism by Nobel laureate in literature Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Since it was released 40 years ago, the novel's surreal and fantastical ideas have inspired artists and writers around the world.
The story depicts Iguaran, whose spirit still haunts her house long after she died. Her spirit is everywhere, standing by every descendant, witnessing their ups and downs from cradle to grave until the last member of the family is eaten by ants while the city disappears. She recalls fragments from her memory: the fear of bearing a baby with a pig's tail, her exile for escaping from a dead man's spirit, the eldest son's homecoming blood, the second son's revolution, the 17 illegitimate children, the unwelcome gypsy with devil-like devices, the mud-eating girl, the sleepless villagers who lost their memories and her own daughter's curse on the family. Before she vanishes with these memories, she confesses that all seven generations have inherited the same eyes as their ancestors, showing immense solitude.
Through devising theatre, director Andrew Chan and the actors will stretch their theatrical creativity to the limit - as Marquez does in words - to portray this fable of solitude in the author's enchanting storytelling style.
"One Hundred Years of Solitude" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The shows will be performed in Cantonese at 8pm on June 24 and 25 (Friday and Saturday), and 3pm on June 25 and 26 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Theatre of Sheung Wan Civic Centre. Tickets priced at $120 and $180 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
