Grand opening for 3rd Hong Kong Games
*************************************

The Hong Kong Games (HKG), a biennial territory-wide sports extravaganza, will be officially launched this Saturday (May 14).

A grand opening ceremony for the 3rd Hong Kong Games will be held on that evening at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground, Eastern District. Exciting sports competitions will then take place in the following three weeks.

A host of wonderful programmes will be on show at the opening at 8pm, featuring a performance by the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, a torch relay by athletes and a variety show featuring Miss Joey Yung, Mr Raymond Lam, Mr Ken Hung and Miss Mag Lam from "The Voice".

The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games gold medallist of the men's all-around individual gymnastics, Mr Yang Wei, and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games gold medallist for horizontal bars and floor exercises, Mr Zou Kai, will attend the opening ceremony as special guests. They will join Hong Kong elite athletes and other athletes representing the 18 districts in lighting the cauldron of the Games.

A spokesman for the Leisure and Culture Services Department (LCSD) today (May 12) advised members of the public who have obtained admission tickets to attend the ceremony as scheduled. Those who are unable to turn up on the day due to unforeseen circumstances may pass the tickets to relatives and friends so as to avoid wastage.

The spokesman called on people holding tickets for the opening ceremony to allow ample time for travelling to the venue and avoid a last-minute rush before admission.

A pre-show event with singing performance will start at 7pm. Ticket holders can enter through the specified gate from 6pm and take their seats in the specified zone. Each ticket admits one person. LCSD staff will be there to assist.

Ticket holders are strongly advised to take public transport. They may go to the sports ground by bus routes 8P, 8X, 82, 85, 106, 118, 606, 682, 694, 788, 789 and A12; or by Green Minibus routes 20, 20M, 47M, 47S and 62A.

Free shuttle buses will be provided for travel between Heng Fa Chuen MTR station and Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground from 6pm to 11pm on the night of the opening ceremony. Passengers must produce admission tickets when boarding the shuttle bus and each ticket is valid for one person only.

Upon entering the sports ground, the audience should comply with the venue rules to avoid causing inconvenience to others.

Those without entry tickets can watch the highlights of the ceremony broadcast on the TVB Jade channel between 10.30pm and 11.30pm on the same night.

The 3rd HKG is organised by the Sports Commission and coordinated by the Community Sports Committee with the 18 District Councils; the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China; relevant National Sports Associations; and the LCSD as co-organisers. The Hong Kong Jockey Club is the "Principal Contributor" while the Yuen Yuen Institute is the "Major Sponsor".

Details of the Games are available at the dedicated homepage, hongkonggames.lcsd.gov.hk.
