************************************************************

Hong Kong Short Film: New Action Express, a scheme to sponsor local short film makers to participate in specified international short film festivals or competitions, opens for applications today (May 11). The scheme is implemented by the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) with funding support from the CreateSmart Initiative administered by Create Hong Kong (CreateHK).

The Head of CreateHK, Mr Jerry Liu, said at the launch ceremony today, "In recent years, the emerging short film industry has nurtured numerous talents who have scooped awards in major international competitions. In view of this, CreateHK has decided to provide funding support for the short film industry to take part in overseas competitions, enabling them to exchange with their counterparts from around the world.

"The scheme provides local short film makers with more opportunities to participate in overseas film festivals and competitions, thereby broadening their horizon and raising their profile internationally. It will also encourage local short film productions and reinforce Hong Kong's position as Asia's creative capital."

The scheme will sponsor the travelling and relevant expenses for local short film producers who are invited to join 78 specified international festivals and competitions. The HKAC will also submit the winning entries of six major local short film competitions to these festivals or competitions, with the entry fee covered by the scheme. The list of international festivals and competitions was compiled after consultation with an advisory panel comprising five representatives from the local short film industry.

Today's launch ceremony was officiated by Mr Liu, HKAC Executive Director, Ms Connie Lam, and award-winning short film makers Mr John Chan and Ms Heiward Mak. Mr Chan and Ms Mak also shared their experiences in participating in overseas competitions.
