Green turtles returned to sea
*****************************

Hong Kong Wetland Park became a temporary home for four juvenile green turtles after they were left at a veterinary clinic last October. Under the care of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) staff, they flourished. But it was time for them to return to their natural home in the sea.

Before the turtles were released near Po Toi, staff inserted microchips and metal tags for future identification. They also attached satellite transmitters on their backs, hoping to track their migratory pathways and their feeding ground locations to help formulate conservation measures to safeguard this endangered species.

The AFCD officer responsible for their release hopes when the green turtles mature into adults, they will return to Lamma Island's Sham Wan beach to breed and to nest, so the cycle begins anew.

A feature story and video on their release appears on news.gov.hk today (May 10).
