Yuen Long District Council by-election nominations open tomorrow

Nominations for the by-election in the Shap Pat Heung North Constituency of Yuen Long District Council will start tomorrow (May 6) and run for two weeks until May 20.

"Nominees are advised to submit their nominations as early as possible to allow time to correct any mistakes in the nomination forms before the deadline," a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) said today (May 5).

"A nominee must be a registered geographical constituency elector aged 21 or above who has ordinarily resided in Hong Kong for the three years immediately preceding his or her nomination," the spokesman said.

"The nominee must submit in person the completed nomination form and an election deposit of $3,000 to the Returning Officer for the by-election within the nomination period. A nomination form must be subscribed by 10 registered electors of the constituency. Each elector can subscribe only one nomination."

The Returning Officer for the by-election is the District Officer (Yuen Long), whose office is located at 4/F, Yuen Long District Office Building, 269 Castle Peak Road, Yuen Long. Nominations are accepted from 9am to 5pm, Mondays to Fridays, and from 9am to noon on Saturdays, except for general holidays.

Nomination forms can be obtained at the office of the Returning Officer or can be downloaded from REO's website (www.reo.gov.hk).

Nomination forms are also available at the REO at 10/F, Harbour Centre, 25 Harbour Road, Wan Chai, and at 10/F, Guardian House, 32 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai. Both offices will extend their service hours to include Saturday mornings during the nomination period.

If there is more than one validly nominated candidate in the by-election, a poll will be held on June 26 (Sunday). The returned candidate will fill the vacant office for an elected member of the Yuen Long District Council.
