***********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The Legislative Council Subcommittee on Harbourfront Planning concluded its nine-day visit to the United States and Canada and returned to Hong Kong yesterday (May 2). Professor Hon Patrick Lau, delegation leader and Chairman of the Subcommittee, described the visit as very fruitful and rewarding in enabling members to gain a better understanding of waterfront development and regeneration strategies, challenges and opportunities, through the experience of other major cities in the world.

Professor Lau said that with the briefings by the organisations and discussions on the planning and management of harbourfront developments and facilities in Boston, New York and Vancouver, members had obtained useful information beneficial to the work of the Subcommittee in monitoring and studying the planning, land use and related issues in respect of the harbourfront areas on both sides of Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.

On the last two days of the delegation's visit on April 29 and 30, members met the representatives of Port Metro Vancouver, the Waterfront Project Office of the City of North Vancouver and the Town Planning Department of the City of Vancouver. The delegation was accompanied by two Councillors of the Vancouver City Council during their visit to harbourfront developments in the city.
