Special traffic and transport arrangements for public procession on Hong Kong Island this Sunday
******************************************************

     The Transport Department (TD) today (April 28) reminded the public that special traffic and transport arrangements would be implemented from Causeway Bay to Central Districts this Sunday (May 1) to facilitate the holding of three public processions to be held on Hong Kong Island.

     The special traffic and transport arrangements will mainly include:

* From about 10am to 10.30am and from about 11.15am to noon

     The procession will depart Chater Garden for Central Government Offices via Ice House Street and Battery Path.

     To facilitate the holding of the procession, the Police will implement intermittent closure of some traffic lanes along the procession route.

* From about 1.30pm to 2.35pm

     The procession will take the route from Victoria Park to Keswick Street, and back to Victoria Park via Sugar Street, Yee Wo Street, Pennington Street and Keswick Street.

     To facilitate the holding of the procession, the Police will implement intermittent closure of some traffic lanes along the procession route.

* From about 2.30pm onwards

     The procession will depart Victoria Park at around 3pm to Central Government Offices via Sugar Street, Yee Wo Street westbound, Hennessy Road westbound, Queensway westbound, Queen's Road Central westbound and Battery Path.

     The following roads will be closed from about 2.30pm onwards:

1. The U-turn slip road leading from Gloucester Road southbound onto Gloucester Road northbound;
2. Jardine's Bazaar;
3. Tang Lung Street;
4. The section of Canal Road East between Hennessy Road and Russell Street;
5. The section of Gloucester Road southbound between Victoria Park Road flyover and Causeway Road (if necessary);
6. Sugar Street;
7. Irving Street (except for vehicles heading to the Regal Hong Kong Hotel);
8. The section of Yee Wo Street westbound between Pennington Street and Hennessy Road;
9. The section of Yun Ping Road between Kai Chiu Road and Pak Sha Road;
10. Kai Chiu Road;
11. The section of Lee Garden Road between Kai Chiu Road and Hennessy Road;
12. The Section of Hennessy Road westbound between Yee Wo Street and Lee Garden Road; and
13. The slow lanes of Hennessy Road westbound, Queensway westbound and Queen's Road Central westbound east of Ice House Street will be intermittently closed.

     In addition, 42 franchised bus routes and one green minibus route operating at the affected areas will be temporarily diverted.  The concerned public transport operators will arrange publicity to inform passengers of the temporary arrangements.

     The TD anticipates that the traffic from Causeway Bay to Central and their vicinity will be significantly congested on that day.  Motorists are advised to avoid driving to the affected areas.  In case of traffic congestion, motorists should exercise tolerance and patience, and follow the instructions of the Police.  People planning to go to the affected areas are advised to use public transport.

     The TD and the Police will closely monitor the traffic situation and implement appropriate measures whenever necessary.  Motorists and the public are advised to be alert to the latest traffic news on radio and television.

     Details of the special traffic and transport arrangements are now available on the department's website (www.td.gov.hk).  For further queries, please call 1823.
