Legislative Council Subcommittee on Harbourfront Planning begins duty visit to the United States and Canada

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The Subcommittee on Harbourfront Planning under the Panel on Development of the Legislative Council departed for Boston, the United States today (April 24) to begin its nine-day duty visit to Boston and New York, and Vancouver in Canada.

     The purpose of the visit is for Members to obtain first-hand information on the three cities' waterfront development and regeneration strategies, to study their institutional arrangements for waterfront planning and management, and to exchange views with concerned parties on the key challenges and opportunities in waterfront development and management. The Subcommittee considers that the visit will be beneficial to its work in monitoring and studying the planning, land use and related issues in respect of the harbourfront areas on both sides of the Victoria Harbour.

     The delegation is led by Chairman of the Subcommittee, Professor Hon Patrick Lau. Other members include Hon Abraham Shek Lai-him (deputy leader), Ir Dr Hon Raymond Ho Chung-tai, Hon Timothy Fok Tsun-ting, Hon Kam Nai-wai, Hon Paul Tse Wai-chun, Hon Albert Chan Wai-yip, Hon Fred Li Wah-ming and Hon Tommy Cheung Yu-yan.

     During its stay in the three cities, the delegation will meet with representatives of organisations responsible for the planning or management of waterfront areas, including the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management, the New York City Department of City Planning, Port Metro Vancouver and the Waterfront Project Office, City of North Vancouver, and conduct site visits to waterfront projects.

     The programme of the visit is as follows:

April 24 (Sunday)
* Departure from Hong Kong for Boston


April 25 (Monday)
* Meeting with The Boston Harbor Association
* Visit to waterfront areas in Boston
* Meeting with Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management
* Visit to Map Room, Boston City Hall with Deputy Director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority

April 26 (Tuesday)
* Visit to the Hudson River Park, New York and meeting with the Hudson River Park Trust
* Meeting with the New York City Department of City Planning

April 27 (Wednesday)
* Visit to the Battery Park City, New York and  meeting with the Battery Park City Authority
* Visit to the Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York and meeting with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation

April 28 (Thursday)
* Departure from New York for Vancouver

April 29 (Friday)
* Meeting with Port Metro Vancouver
* Meeting with the Waterfront Project Office, City of North Vancouver
* Visit to redevelopment sites at Lonsdale
* Visit to the Vancouver Convention Centre new extension (West building) and the new promenade
* Meeting with Town Planning Department, City of Vancouver
* Visit to the Olympic Village and the promenade

April 30 (Saturday)
* Visit to waterfront areas with City Councillors of Vancouver
* Visit to the Granville Island

May 1 (Sunday)
* Departure from Vancouver for Hong Kong
