April 2011 issue of Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (April 20) the April 2011 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

     In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Analysis of Hong Kong's Exports of Goods", "The Financial Services Sector in Hong Kong" and "The Situation of the Four Key Industries in the Hong Kong Economy in 2009" are included.

"Analysis of Hong Kong's Exports of Goods"

     Hong Kong is an externally oriented economy and the performance of external merchandise trade has significant impact on the economy of Hong Kong.  In 2010, the value of Hong Kong's total exports amounted to $3,031.0 billion, while that of imports was $3,364.8 billion.  The ratio of the value of total exports to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 1.73, while that of the value of imports to GDP was 1.92.

     This feature article analyses the performance of Hong Kong's exports during the period 2000 to 2010.

"The Financial Services Sector in Hong Kong"

     Hong Kong is one of the most vibrant international financial centres in the world.  The contribution of the financial services sector to Hong Kong's GDP increased from some 12% in 2000 to some 15% in 2009.  Although the business of the financial services sector was adversely affected by financial tsunami in 2008 and 2009, it saw a noticeable revival amid the strong upturn in the economy in 2010.  This feature article presents the operating characteristics and business performance of selected industries in the sector between 2007 and 2009.  It also briefly highlights the overall quarterly business performance of selected industries in the sector in 2010.

"The Situation of the Four Key Industries in the Hong Kong Economy in 2009"

     Financial services, trading and logistics, tourism, and producer and professional services are the Four Key Industries in the Hong Kong economy.  They have been the driving force of Hong Kong's economic growth, providing impetus to growth of other sectors and creating employment.

     A feature article analysing the economic contribution and employment situation in 2008 in respect of the Four Key Industries was published in the March 2010 issue of the HKMDS.  This feature article is an updated version of the article published in March 2010, with data on the Four Key Industries for 2009 incorporated.
