Joining a comprehensive instrumental training programme can help young people develop their musical talent - and also stimulate their creativity and enhance their interest in art.
The Instrumental Music Training Scheme, organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is now recruiting intermediate year-one and advanced year-one trainees for 2011-12. The deadline for applications is May 16.
With an annual enrolment of more than 4,000 trainees, from elementary to advanced level, the scheme provides training in string, wind and Chinese musical instruments, including violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, dizi, erhu, pipa, sheng, zheng, suona, ruan and liuyequn. The three-year intermediate and advanced courses are supplemented with musicianship and music theory training to provide trainees with a comprehensive course of music training.
Weekly one-hour group lessons are conducted in Cantonese at the Music Office's five music centres – Wan Chai, Kwun Tong, Mong Kok, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan. Annual tuition fees of $2,585 for intermediate level and $3,410 for advanced level are payable in four instalments. Young players aged seven to 19 are welcome to apply.
Leaflets and application forms are now available at all music centres of the Music Office or the Music Office website: www.lcsd.gov.hk/musicoffice. Qualified applicants will be invited to attend an audition in June and will be notified of audition results by mid-August, with training beginning in September.
