Hong Kong and Australia sign agreement on police cooperation (with photo)

     The police of Hong Kong and Australia today (April 18) signed in Canberra a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement to combat transnational crime, including drug trafficking, technology crime, economic crime and money laundering.

     The MOU was signed by the Commissioner of the Hong Kong Police, Mr Tsang Wai-hung, and the Acting Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Mr Peter Drennan.

     The agreement which was signed during the Commissionerˇ¦s visit to Canberra complements the existing cooperation between Hong Kong Police and AFP. It sets out a framework in tackling transnational crime and also bolsters the partnership in capacity building and professional development.

     Following the signing, the Commissioner held a meeting with the senior AFP officers on various policing issues of mutual concern.

     Tomorrow Mr Tsang will fly to Jakarta where he will pay a courtesy call on the Commissioner General of the Indonesian National Police (INP), Mr Timur Pradopo, and meet with senior INP officials to discuss police cooperation.

     ˇ§It is important that Hong Kong Police maintains a close and dynamic relationship with our regional partners when it comes to law enforcement in the ever-changing police environment,ˇ¨ said Mr Tsang.

     Mr Tsang will return to Hong Kong on April 21.
