CHP investigates confirmed case of severe influenza B infection
******************************************************

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health drew public attention to its investigation into a confirmed case of severe influenza B infection affecting an 11-year-old boy.

The boy presented with cough, runny nose and fever since April 5, and then developed confusion and convulsion on April 14. He was admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of United Christian Hospital. The clinical diagnosis was encephalitis.

The nasopharyngeal aspirate specimen taken from the boy on April 14 tested positive for influenza B. He is now in a serious condition.

No outbreak of respiratory illness was reported recently in the school the patient attended.  His home contacts did not have influenza-like symptoms.

The spokesman reminded members of the public to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures against influenza.

The public are advised to maintain good personal and environmental hygiene and build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise, adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking.

More details on preventive tips regarding influenza are available on CHP's website (www.chp.gov.hk).
