Police facilitate lawful and peaceful processions
*************************************************

The Police will facilitate all lawful and peaceful assemblies and processions in relation to the Budget Debate in Central tomorrow (April 13).

A Police spokesman said today (April 12), "The Force respect the rights of individuals to peaceful assemblies and processions and to express their views.  In facilitating the expression of the views of participants of assemblies and processions, we are also duty bound by law to maintain public order and ensure the rights and safety of other people are not affected.

"It is important that participants express their views in a lawful, safe and orderly manner."

Under Legislative Council (Powers and Privileges) Ordinance (Cap 382), the obstructing of movement of Legislative Council (LegCo) members in and out of LegCo is an offence.

Participants of assemblies and processions should refrain from blocking the LegCo entrances, roads or pavements in the vicinity of LegCo. Any attempt to charge or break the police cordons lines, or to seize or climb on mills barriers will be intervened.

"No violence and disorderly behaviour which constitute criminal acts or threaten public safety and public order will be tolerated."

"Police will deal with such situations in a resolute and professional manner in order to protect the wider interests of community," the spokesman said.

As there may be traffic delays in Central district tomorrow, members of the public are advised to use public transport. Motorists should exercise patience and follow the instructions of police officers at the scene. On street parking in the vicinity of LegCo and its adjacent streets will also be suspended.
