Mrs Rita Lau resigns SCED post
******************************

The following is a statement issued by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau, today (April 8):

"On finding myself unwell on March 16, I arranged and attended a medical examination on the same day.  Consequently, on March 22, I underwent a surgical operation to have a tumour found in my sigmoid colon removed.  For the medical and professional care of the doctor and medical staff at Queen Mary Hospital, I would like to express my greatest gratitude to them all.

I am required to receive follow-up treatment and to rest for a period of time.  As this may affect the performance of my full duties as the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development and after considering the condition of my health, I have decided to resign from my office and on this day tendered my resignation to the Chief Executive.  I believe my decision to resign is in the public interest and a responsible one as well.

I wish to thank the Central People's Government (CPG) and the Chief Executive for the appointment, and the guidance and support they have given me in my work.  Furthermore, it is my great honour to be able to devote my entire career to public service, and work side by side with an outstanding team of civil servants to serve our people and Hong Kong.  For this assistance and support and to colleagues in the political team, I would like to express my deepest appreciation.  I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all Councillors, trade and industry sectors, academia, Mainland authorities, CPG offices in Hong Kong, as well as partnering organisations and enterprises for their support for the work of my Bureau and their collaboration.  I will fondly remember the friendship they have extended to me."
