A total of 274 winners of the Hongkong Bank Foundation Junior Police Call (JPC) Awards 2010 were commended today (March 26) for their outstanding contributions in organising and participating in community services, disseminating fight crime messages and promoting the JPC Scheme.
Organised by the Police with a total funding of more than $5 million sponsored by the Hongkong Bank Foundation for the past 25 years, the Awards comprises five categories: Best JPC Member, Best JPC Leader/Advanced Leader, Best JPC School Club (Primary School), Best JPC School Club (Secondary School) and Best JPC District Council.
During the Presentation Ceremony, they received commendation trophies and cash awards from the Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr Lee Ka-chiu; and HSBC Head of Corporate Sustainability Asia Pacific Region, Ms Teresa Au.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Superintendent of Police Public Relations Branch (PPRB), Mr Li Kin-fai said that the JPC scheme had made significant developments over the past 36 years. Numerous young members had benefited from various training courses, and mainland and overseas visits, and they were committed to serving and caring for the community through active participation in volunteer services, fight crime and anti-drug activities.
Mr Li pointed out that the scheme currently had more than 180 000 members, including some 1 100 Non-ethnic Chinese. He thanked JPC honorary presidents, school principals, teachers and school clubs for their support and made the scheme a success.
Ms Teresa Au also commended the JPC scheme's positive and sustainable impacts on young peopleˇ¦s personal growth. She said: "HSBC has been a strong supporter of education, in particular projects designed to enhance students' holistic development. HSBC is proud to have funded the Junior Police Call Awards Scheme since 1986, and we hope that local youth will strive to develop a positive attitude and be better equipped for challenges and responsibilities in life through participating in JPC activities."
A selection panel made up of representatives from the PPRB, HSBC, non-governmental organisation and JPC Central Advisory Board, picked the winners from some 1 000 nominated JPC members and over 700 school clubs.
Mr Wong Ho-yan from Sham Shui Po District was selected as the Best JPC Member and Mr Elson Chow from Tsuen Wan District the Best JPC Advanced Leader. Each received a commendation trophy and $8,000 cash award.
The Queen Elizabeth School of Mong Kok District and St. Bonaventure Catholic Primary School of Wong Tai Sin District won the Best JPC School Club (Secondary School) and the Best JPC School Club (Primary School) awards respectively. The former received a cash award of $13,000 and the latter $8,000. The Best JPC District Council award went to Sham Shui Po JPC District Council, which was honoured with a $21,000 cash award.
