Employer fined for violation of safety rules

     Ying Wah Cleaning Service Limited was fined $20,000 at Shatin Magistrates' Court today (March 25) for violation of Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on August 27 last year at Tai Po in which a cleaner was suspected to have fallen to a refuse chute while handling refuse.

     According to Sections 6(1), 6(2)(a) and 6(2)(c) of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, the employer shall provide and maintain a system of work and provide information, instruction, training and supervision as necessary to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the safety and health of the workers employed.  Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000.
